Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) – long-lasting and unique digital labels for people (researchers), places (research organizations), and things (research outputs) – help disambiguate and connect information across the increasingly complex digital research ecosystem. As CRKN works to advance access to knowledge, we believe that PIDs are key to an efficient and interoperable research ecosystem. CRKN leads the ORCID Canada Consortium and co-manages the DataCite Canada Consortium with the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, providing critical support for these PIDs across the country. As these consortia have matured, the timing is right for a National PID Strategy to better coordinate their work and to look beyond ORCID iDs and DataCite DOIs. Please join us to learn more about the existing PID program at CRKN, the work to develop and implement a National PID Strategy, and to hear presentations from our members on the value of a national strategy and use cases for PIDs at their institutions.

Please join CRKN staff and Denise LaFitte (Chair of the Content Strategy Committee) for our annual update on licensing activities and renewal negotiations. Our session will begin with a brief overview of outcomes from last fiscal year, followed by significant time to review this year’s negotiation results (Elsevier, Oxford, and Sage) and gather feedback and guidance from members on next steps. Updates will also be shared regarding preparations for next year’s negotiations, particularly with respect to Springer Nature, and on the latest developments regarding the expansion of the Scholars Portal journals platform for all CRKN members. As always, the input from members during the licensing session is critical for the work of the CSC, and we are looking forward to an interactive and vibrant discussion in Vancouver!

Canadian libraries have a long history of collaborating to achieve effective control over both costs and terms in licenses with large commercial publishers, and more recently have been expanding open access options for researchers at no additional charge within read and publish agreements. Simultaneously, researchers continue to pay Article Processing Charges (APCs) to publish in other journals while having no ability to exert their collective power to negotiate those costs. This panel will explore if now is the time to collaborate with research offices and funding agencies to harness their collective influence and leverage CRKN’s negotiation expertise to bring cost control to the APC market in Canada.

The merger has led to advanced value for members in both content and in the potential of the infrastructure. The session will include a brief overview of the Canadiana Collections, including highlights from recent additions to both Canadiana and Heritage. Additionally, we will provide an update about the newly formed Canadiana Content Sub-Committee’s recent work on collections strategy and prioritization as well as recent modernization and user driven enhancements to CRKN’s cultural and heritage collections and infrastructure. We’ll also talk about the impact of the Canadiana Collections on the Canadian researcher and teaching community and provide an update on the RG10 ICR Transcription Pilot Project.

We have reached a stage of relative maturity across much of the digital research infrastructure that provides support to the HSS research lifecycle in Canada. However, that infrastructure is still tenuously financed and exists as relatively uncoordinated, independent programs. With the Digital Research Alliance of Canada currently reviewing its 2025-2030 mandate to support digital research infrastructure in Canada, now is the time to consider how we might align these separate pieces together as a coherent and coordinated, and most importantly sustainable, national research infrastructure program. In this session, each panelist will provide a brief overview of their organization’s existing infrastructure and will discuss what the future looks like for them, followed by a moderated discussion on how Canada’s critical HSS infrastructures can work together to improve collective interoperability and sustainability.

Building on the robust discussions on CRKN’s Canada Foundation for Innovation, Innovation Fund grant application at last year’s CRKN business meetings, this session will provide an update to members on how the project vision has evolved over the past year. We will also introduce the new research team, discuss how this infrastructure will facilitate future research, and outline the timeline and status of the application. This session will also include a detailed discussion of the ongoing financial support needed from members in the next few years, to support Canadiana services and Infrastructure as we develop the CFI IF application to transform Canadiana into our collective vision for essential infrastructure that enables cutting-edge research.
