Unlocking Knowledge

We collaborate with universities, libraries, researchers, and institutions across Canada to create pathways to trusted knowledge.

Powering Research

We negotiate national licenses and advance open access to make research widely available across Canada.

Sharing Canada's History

Canadiana provides access to millions of digitized historical records from across the country.

Connecting Canada Through Knowledge

CRKN is a national network of 88 Canadian universities, libraries, and research institutions dedicated to making trustworthy knowledge accessible to all. Together, we are building a future where knowledge is open, shared, and preserved for generations to come.

OUR MEMBERS

Empowering Research, Learning, and Discovery

We license scholarly content, promote open access, and preserve Canada’s documentary heritage, so that knowledge can be freely accessed and shared by librarians, researchers, educators, students, and the public.

ABOUT US

Programs

Through our three core programs—Licensing and Open Access, Canadiana, and Persistent Identifiers—we support trusted, long-term access to research and historical content across Canada.

Licensing and Open Access

By negotiating more than $150 million in national licensing agreements and open-access initiatives, CRKN ensures that Canadian institutions have affordable access to cutting-edge research content while working with our members to make content openly available to all.

Canadiana by CRKN | par RCDR

Thanks to the financial support of CRKN members, our Canadiana and Héritage Collections provide researchers and the public with access to over 69 million digitized pages of Canadian historical content, including books, newspapers, maps, government records, and personal papers.

Persistent Identifiers (PIDs)

Persistent identifiers are durable digital links that uniquely identify research outputs, people, and institutions. Through our PID Program, we help Canada build reliable, connected pathways to trusted knowledge.

CRKN respectfully acknowledges that its offices are located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe People. We also recognize that our member institutions are situated across the land now known as Canada, and we extend our respect and gratitude to all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

Through our work—particularly with the Canadiana and Héritage collections—we are committed to acknowledging colonial injustices, supporting First Nation, Inuit, and Métis data sovereignty, and working in partnership with communities. We strive to engage in respectful practices that honour community protocols and uphold the right of Indigenous Peoples to determine how materials related to their heritage are governed.
