PIDs are in the Water: The Value of Persistent Identifiers and Concrete Implementations
May 26, 2026 | 3:45–4:15 PM ET | 30 minutes
In this session of DRI Connect 2026, John Aspler (Manager, Canadian PID Program, CRKN), Tristan Kuehn (Product Lead, Discovery Services, the Alliance), Dominique Roche (Senior Policy Advisor and Chair, Tri-Agency RDM Working Group), and Alyssa Arbuckle (Strategic Research and Partnerships Advisor, CRKN) will explore how Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) serve as foundational infrastructure for Canadian research. They will demonstrate how PIDs link information about researchers, institutions, and publications across distributed systems, enabling the long-term findability, accessibility, and reuse of scholarly work — while actively shaping workflows, recognition, and the persistence of trusted knowledge.
Drawing on Canada's emergence as a global leader in PID implementation, the speakers will highlight the work of the Canadian PID Advisory Committee (CPIDAC) and present the recently published National PID Strategy, developed with CRKN and the Alliance, which supports institutions in advancing research intelligence, open science, and reducing administrative burden on scholars.
Through concrete case studies — including the integration of PIDs into national funder systems and PID workflows for Awards — they will illustrate the value of PIDs for Canadian research and DRI services, and contextualize PID activity within broader national and disciplinary research infrastructure.

Partnering to Visualize Collaborations Using Persistent Identifiers: A Work-Integrated Learning Project
June 3, 2026 | 1:00–1:50 PM ET | 50 minutes
This IASSIST presentation highlights a work‑integrated learning partnership between CRKN and librarians at Mount Allison University that introduced undergraduate students to the role of persistent identifiers (PIDs) in the research ecosystem.
Through hands‑on coursework, students applied data science, research, and communication skills to enhance an R‑based data visualization project for ORCID Canada Consortium members. Attendees will learn practical strategies, challenges, and lessons for building successful collaborations between academic institutions and national research infrastructures.

Put a PID On It: Enhancing OA Reporting for Good
June 3, 2026 | 2:00–2:20 PM | 20 minutes
This BRIC 2026 session explores how persistent identifiers (PIDs) can strengthen Open Access reporting for read and publish agreements across Canada. Drawing on CRKN’s dual role as a national license negotiator and a coordinator of PID adoption, the session highlights opportunities to improve the quality and usefulness of OA publishing data.
The presentation will demonstrate how embedding DOIs, ORCID iDs, and ROR IDs into OA reports enables richer, more interoperable insights into agreement uptake, research impact, and institutional trends. Attendees will gain insight into how PID‑enhanced reporting can reduce administrative burden and support more effective, evidence‑based decision‑making around OA and licensing investments.
