Researchers at participating CRKN member institutions can now publish free open access in select CSP journals

January 30, 2023

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) are pleased to announce a new transformative open access publishing agreement that offers unlimited open access publishing in five CSP journals, and a 25 per cent discount on article processing charges (APCs) in 14 additional CSP journals, for corresponding authors from participating CRKN member institutions.

“CRKN’s vision is that ‘The world's knowledge is accessible by all’ and we believe open access is key to achieving that vision,” states Clare Appavoo, Executive Director of CRKN. “Expanding our long-standing collaboration with CSP to include new open access publishing options in CSP journals is a great step forward for open research in Canada.”

This three-year agreement is an essential first step to a “made in Canada” approach to the publication of open access research, and will strengthen the research ecosystem by enabling Canadian authors to publish with a Canadian not-for-profit publisher with fewer barriers. The agreement enables corresponding authors affiliated with the 44 participating CRKN member institutions to publish free and unlimited open access in the following five CSP journals: Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Canadian Journal of Physics, Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, Genome, and Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. Authors will also receive a 25 per cent discount on APCs in 14 other CSP journals.

“We believe that the future of science is open and we are committed to doing our part to get there,” says Elaine Stott, Chief Executive Officer at CSP. “Some of the best research in the world comes from Canada and we’re very excited to partner with CRKN to make Canadian research accessible to everyone.”

Based in Ottawa, both CRKN and CSP are mission-driven organizations that aim to support research communities through open access. CRKN’s mandate is to advance interconnected, sustainable access to the world's research and to Canada's documentary heritage content for its 84 members and the diverse communities they serve. CSP is a not-for-profit publisher that is committed to shifting from subscription-based business models to open access models that help authors and readers accelerate the advancement of knowledge.
