CRKN Welcomes Three New Associate Members

February 15, 2023

The CRKN Board of Directors is delighted to welcome three new Associate Members to the CRKN membership: NOSM University, Université de Hearst, and Université de l’Ontario français. All three institutions were approved at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Members and are participating in CRKN’s content licensing program.

NOSM University
NOSM University is Canada’s first independent medical university and was purpose-built to address the health needs of Northern Ontario. NOSM University relies on the commitment and expertise of the peoples of Northern Ontario to educate health-care professionals to practise in Indigenous, Francophone, rural, remote, and underserved communities. With a focus on diversity, inclusion and advocacy, NOSM University is an award-winning, socially-accountable organization renowned for its innovative model of distributed, community-engaged education and research. In addition to offering a fully accredited MD  and Postgraduate Residency Programs, NOSM University offers a Master of Medical Studies, a Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program (NODIP), a Medical Physics Residency Education Program (MPREP), a Physician Assistant (PA) Program and provides placements for other health sciences learners across Northern Ontario.

The Health Sciences Library Team at NOSM University commented, “We're excited to take part in CRKN and the opportunities it will allow us to engage in to enhance our library’s collection.”

Université de Hearst
Université de Hearst is the first university in Ontario to offer degree programs taught fully in the French language. Founded in 1953 and formerly affiliated with Laurentian University, Université de Hearst was granted its own university charter by the Ontario Legislative Assembly in 2021. Today, it offers undergraduate programs on three campuses in northern Ontario, and serves thousands of students from across northeastern Ontario, twenty African countries, and France.

“We are delighted to be a part of this network, which provides equitable access to resources essential to any academic path,” said Luc Bussières, rector of Université de Hearst. “Students and faculty at Université de Hearst will greatly benefit from this expanded access to knowledge, and our institution is proud to join the ranks of other Canadian universities by becoming a member.”

Université de l’Ontario français
Université de l’Ontario français is a new post-secondary institution and innovative space centred on the creation and mobilization of knowledge in French. Opening in Toronto in September 2021, the university is committed to creating a French-language university tradition in central-southwestern Ontario, and is guided in all its activities by values of excellence, diversity, inclusivity, and collaboration. UOF offers four undergraduate degrees as well as a professional degree in Education.

Mohammed Harti, Librarian at UOF, stated, “Associate membership with CRKN offers UOF the opportunity to access a wide range of resources and scholarly publications needed to support members of its community in teaching, learning, and research.”

Associate Members of CRKN join our network of academic and research institutions from across Canada and benefit from access to member-only resources, priority rates for CRKN’s digitization services and annual conference, governance opportunities through CRKN’s committees and task groups, and more. Associate Members participating in our content licensing program also benefit from a collective negotiating body that ensures sustainable pricing and achieves agreements with publishers that represent the needs of the Canadian research ecosystem.
