About the Chinese Times

The Chinese Times newspaper was first published in 1907 as the Chinese English Daily News It was renamed the Chinese Daily News 大漢日報 in 1910, and by 1915 was operating under its final name of the Chinese Times 大漢公報. The newspaper also operated under the romanized name of Tai Hon Kong Bo Ltd. until 1939. The daily newspaper was published continuously until 1992 in Vancouver’s Chinatown, first from 443-445 Carrall Street, then at 1 East Pender Street from 1939 onwards. In addition to the local news, it covered international issues of interest among its overseas Chinese readers from an early period defined simultaneously by political upheaval and unrest in China and pervasive anti-Asian racism in Canada and in the diaspora.

The Chinese Times was founded by the Chinese Freemasons Society of Canada (Vancouver, BC) Known as Hongmen 洪門 in Chinese and historically as the Chee Kung Tong 致公堂, the Chinese Freemasons first formed as a political organization in mid-17th century imperial China. Its members were among the waves of Chinese migration to North America starting in the mid-1800s with the gold rush; its first Canadian branch was established in 1863 in Barkerville, British Columbia. In Canada, the Chinese Freemasons were among many mutual aid societies providing settlement services to Chinese immigrants; their publishing of the Chinese Times kept Chinese communities across the country informed for over eight decades.

Early in the newspaper’s founding, a significant political role was played in support of revolutionary Chinese leader, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Sun was a member of the Chinese Freemasons; by the time of his visit to Vancouver in early 1911, the organization had become his strongest supporter in North America. The Chinese Times was lent as a powerful voice to help advance Sun’s vision for a democratic China among overseas Chinese communities and to mobilize their financial support for his revolution. The relationship between the Freemasons and Sun would later sour.

About the collection

The Chinese Times was published daily, except Sundays and holidays. This collection contains issues dating from 1914 to 1992. Totaling about 250,000 pages, it covers many important moments in the history of Vancouver’s Chinese community, from early immigration struggles to the establishment of a thriving home base near the city’s downtown. Through the 1960s, the newspaper provided extensive coverage of the community’s lobbying against urban renewal, freeway construction and firehall plans in Vancouver’s Chinatown. It also reported on significant historic events, including the Chinese Students Soccer Team’s Mainland Cup victory in 1933 and the Chinatown community’s celebration of Vancouver’s Golden Jubilee in 1936.

The Chinese Times was the longest-running newspaper in the largest Chinese community in Canada; it reflects the long history of Chinese immigration and settlement in Canada, including participation in the World Wars, struggle against anti-Chinese immigration policies, and hardships through the Depression and persistent racism.

A prevailing theme is the organizational power of the Chinese community to work together to persevere and overcome adversity.

Custodial history

The Chinese Freemasons Society of Canada donated an original print run of the Chinese Times to the University of British Columbia (UBC) Library in 1971 which was microfilmed and further preserved and rehoused in 2016.

By 2007, UBC Library had partnered with Simon Fraser University (SFU) Library to digitize the newspaper under the Multicultural Canada digitization project, and the digitized newspaper was subsequently hosted online by SFU Library as part of its digitized newspapers collections.

In 2025, its hosting was migrated to the Canadiana collection. Copyright of the Chinese Times remains with the Chinese Freemasons Society of Canada.

Search tips

Note from CRKN: Most newspaper pages have OCR (Optical Character Recognition) in Traditional Chinese. As of June 2025, approximately 1,144 newspaper issues from the years 1914, 1941, and 1980 do not have OCR data. OCR processing for these issues is underway and this page will be updated when it is complete.

  • See basic search tips on the page Navigating the Collections. Please note that the OCR processing of Chinese characters is imprecise, despite efforts to improve its performance with this material.
  • Visit the full collection record to access all issues of the Chinese Times at once. Use the function “Search within this series” to search only within the Chinese Times.
  • To search within an individual newspaper issue, navigate to that issue and click the magnifying glass icon in the image viewer to open the search function.
  • Use Traditional Chinese characters (not Simplified Chinese) to search the collection.
  • Search results may be improved by searching with single characters only.
