License Negotiations: Assessing Results and Preparing our Strategy (part 1)

As the Content Strategy Committee (CSC) prepares for its negotiations next year, we have conducted significant analysis into various elements of each of these agreements to prepare our strategy, particularly for those that have publishing elements included. This analysis partly arose out of discussions held at the Summit in 2024, where members asked CRKN to take a deeper look into the effectiveness and sustainability of read and publish agreements. In response, we have gathered publication data from major publishers for a period of six years, from multiple sources, and for both CRKN institutions and global tallies. As well, this year we conducted expanded engagement with members through meetings with Library Directors, and via a survey aimed at collecting historical library budget data and will share our findings with members. As a guest speaker, we will also hear from Monica Ward (Head, Collections Strategy at University of Ottawa) who has conducted an exploratory study on whether library consortia involved in TAs have clear goals and if they assess the agreements they negotiate. In response to member feedback, we are ensuring that we provide ample time for peer discussion during breakout sessions, as well as time for groups to share their thoughts back to the full delegation. We are looking forward to digging deeper into these topics and will provide a detailed information packet in advance of the Summit so members can arrive prepared.
