Coalition Publica and Decentralized Access to Canadian Journals: A Preliminary Usage Study

Document
Download
Since 2017, Érudit and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) have been working together as Coalition Publica, with the ambitious goal of developing a non-commercial, open source, national scholarly publishing infrastructure that links PKP’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) with the Érudit platform (erudit.org). A few years on, what can we say about the (mostly open access) journals that are using this infrastructure? Do they benefit from having their content on both OJS and Érudit, and if so, how?

No Access, No Value: Advocating for More Equitable Access to Course Resources When Commercial Publishers Fail Us

Document
Download
This session will describe how the closure of our library and resulting lack of access to print course reserves became a catalyst for advocacy and outreach to persuade faculty to replace commercial textbooks with open educational resources (OER) and library-licensed content. Through our efforts to mobilize OER in the past and drawing on research from our 2016 Textbook Broke survey, we’ll discuss how we facilitated cross-team collaboration to mobilize “access as a value,” ultimately developing an approach to faculty outreach, services, and workflows that allowed us to put our values into action.

Transcribing Handwritten Documents with Artificial Intelligence

Document
Download
Funded by SSHRC and designed at Université de Québec à Rimouski, the research project “Nouvelle-France numérique” aims to better document the mechanisms of documentary production and its networks of actors in New France. This project notably builds on the computing platform READ (Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Documents), which uses artificial intelligence to develop automatic recognition of handwriting. Using models prepared by researchers or archivists familiar with sources from the French Regime, the tool manages to transcribe the documents submitted for processing with an increasing and already very high efficiency.

Over this last year, expanding access to research through digitization has become an increased priority as in-person access to collections was restricted. How have digitization priorities at the institutional, regional, and national level shifted and how can we work together to meet ambitious digitization goals? This session will also provide a brief overview of the links between digitization strategies and collective print initiatives to brainstorm future opportunities. In addition, a discussion regarding gaps in digitization infrastructure and capacity will be convened.

This presentation will explore CHIN’s approach to document linguistic and cultural specificity through three attributes appended to vocabulary data in addition to language tags: a reference culture, a conceptual framework, and an example. It will focus on how each of these can either be documented by a provider or derived by the aggregator based on the data structure from which the value is extracted (language; provider domain of expertise and database field; record).
