We are honoured to welcome Senator Michèle Audette to the 2022 CRKN Conference as keynote speaker. Join us for a discussion of her involvement in the fight against the discrimination of Indigenous women and how she is supporting their needs and voices, as well as how she has worked to create educational opportunities for Indigenous youth in Canada, and promote reconciliation.

In 2014, UdeM undertook its first community consultation project to identify what serials were essential for teaching and academic research. To evaluate the institutional serial collections, this collaborative approach was based bibliometric analysis and consultations with faculty members and graduate students. Bibliothèques UdeM repeated the exercise in 2022 to re-evaluate their serial collections, at a time when scholarly publishing is considerably changing, with the increased amount of open access content. Justine Ménard and Khalid Jouamaa, Direction des collections des bibliothèques UdeM, will present the highlights and results of this second consultation.

With the recent launch of North: the Canadian Shared Print Network/ Nord: Réseau canadien de conservation partagée des documents imprimés, large-scale collaborative efforts across libraries in different sectors will be implemented to ensure that the full scope of Canadian published heritage will be better preserved collectively. In this presentation, attendees will learn about the foundation and governance of the national network, potential benefits of Shared Print projects, work completed to date, and goals for the coming year.

Like many other similar institutions, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) is considering the best approach for users to access its collections. As it turns out, the traditional tools for documentary research do not always meet the needs of users. As such, geolocating the content of museums, archives and libraries is a promising avenue.

Within the humanities, the raw materials for research are often limited to the traditional Western canon. This creates a tension for scholars when their research interests fall outside that traditional scope. The project being presented sought to expand the availability of the creative, political, documentary and scholarly writings of black Canadians that have been insufficiently studied due to the difficulties scholars have encountered in accessing the works in question.

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and its members are critical partners in the work of ensuring access to the world’s knowledge for a diversity of students and faculty with print disabilities. The 2016 CRKN model license was a step in the right direction. However, unless principles of accessibility are intentionally centred at all stages of CRKN’s activities - from procurement of academic journal subscriptions and eBooks, to negotiation with vendors, and the digitization of existing and often historic print resources - CRKN members may actually create and sustain accessibility barriers for disabled readers.

Less than 10% of the world’s publications are available in accessible formats, creating a significant imbalance in access to education and knowledge for individuals who are print disabled. In order to facilitate work to bridge this gap, academic institutions and libraries need to understand the complex environment of accessibility, from discovery and delivery of works, and the systems and services that support them.

Like many Canadian academic institutions, the University of Toronto Libraries is grappling with its historical and ongoing relationships with Indigenous peoples, in order to develop a more respectful and welcoming environment. As part of this process, library workers formed the Indigenous Metadata Working Group (IMWG), an informal group of approximately 20 people that aim to improve access to material that relates to Indigenous peoples and knowledges within University of Toronto Library collections.

In 2021, discussions between the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries’ (COPPUL) Digital Preservation, Indigenous Knowledge, and Shared Print programs led to the formation of the Indigenous Historical Publications Working Group (IHPWG). Made up of members with expertise in Indigenous Studies, collection development, digitization, and digital preservation, this group is guiding efforts within COPPUL to improve discovery of, access to, and preservation of publications by and about Indigenous communities on whose lands our members live and work. These publications include newspapers, newsletters and various forms of grey literature.

The Open Access landscape is complex and rapidly evolving. Business models, technologies, organisations, initiatives, mandates, and mergers proliferate, while at the same time libraries have limited staffing, expertise, and financial resources to devote to OA. How can libraries optimize the use of open investment funds and labour? How can we support initiatives that align with our values, notably that scholarly communication should be a public, rather than a private good?

The Second World War (SWW) was the first time women officially served in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. A multi-year project to index an accession of government photographs from the SWW era in an effort to identify servicewomen began in 2018 as an effort to help family members identify their ancestors in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada. This presentation will describe the project with a focus on the outreach component which has in turn lead to opportunities to engage with women veterans and the general public through transcribing text and tagging images using LAC's crowdsourcing tool: Co-lab.

Understanding the complexities and nuances of Canada’s non-commercial journal publishing ecosystem is critical if we are to establish a sustainable and open path forward. An ecosystem is, by definition, a community of organisms together with their physical environment. In biology, we consider that “ecosystems with higher biodiversity tend to be more stable with greater resistance and resilience in the face of disturbances, or disruptive events.” Recent research has demonstrated a near absence of commercial publishers in the Canadian context. Rather, journals in Canada look much like a biological ecosystem, and rely on a complex and interrelated community of support, including organizations such as universities, scholarly associations, not-for-profit presses, and academic libraries.

Within research and knowledge sharing institutions, there is an increasing focus on improving equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA). New graduates and early career librarians are often asked how they integrate EDIA into their work, without necessarily having had the experience to address this fully. A panel of white, settler, early career librarians on the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum will discuss how they are dealing with multiple priorities while addressing the needs of diverse users, and how they view community support as a tool to develop their understanding of EDIA in life and work.

The British Columbia Regional Digitized History (BCRDH) project is coordinated by the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus Library, located in Kelowna, BC. BCRDH is a network of partnerships between the Library’s special collections program and 45+ geographically adjacent GLAM organizations in BC’s southern interior, including museums, archives, and historical societies. The aim of the project is to develop and sustain a shared, regionally-organized digital repository, and to provide open online access to that digital repository as an act of public service.

In this session, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the CCDH’s bold vision and mission, grounding principles, and community-driven priorities, as we unite as a community to expand respectful digital access to Canada’s heritage.

Until now, a large part of Government of Canada scientists and researchers have not had the infrastructure to make their scientific publications openly available. This session outlines how we are addressing this gap, through the development of the Federal Open Science Repository (FOSR), a shared repository to make federally funded scientific outputs accessible to all.

Presenters will discuss thematic web archives in relation to emerging collections strategy in two different organizations. Web archiving activity is generally preservation-driven, and thematic web archiving in specific may be as well; however thematic approaches also effectively seek to augment traditional library collections with web-based content that is aligned with collections scope or mandates.

Since 2017 the Community Scholars Program has connected researchers in BC-based non-profit organizations with access to published academic research together with supporting library services. In 2021, Community Scholars Librarians undertook work on a Theory of Change, reflecting on various inputs in order to consider the development of the Program to date, its values, and how it might effectively respond to the evolving needs of participating Community Scholars, even as the program matures into sustainability, and attracts new supporting organizations.

We are mid-way through an ambitious strategic plan, in which transforming scholarly communications is at the core. As we consider our progress over these last three years in advancing open scholarship and prioritizing cost reductions with commercial vendors, during this workshop we will review the principles that guide licensing decisions, collectively brainstorm approaches that advance open scholarship in Canada, explore the potential of a collective investment strategy, and more. This workshop will include breaks, including a break for lunch.
